An inspired experimentation.
The Easel Art Desk is crafted entirely out of reclaimed solid white oak and walnut hardwoods with a mix of brass and stainless steel hardware, throughout. The plain, quarter sawn and rift grain is used throughout the millwork and grain selection. The desk's frame and cross rails are married together via wedged mortise and tenon joinery. The wedges are made out of walnut and incorporated in a vertical fashion instead of traditional horizontal orientation.
The top surface is a grain matched slab along it's length with 1/8" reveal around the easel panel edges. The panel has a relief cut at the top, center portion for easy access and lifting operation with a single palm, allowing for a comfortable grip on the panel and the brass support bar underneath. The easel has a built-in pivoting mechanism crafted out of white oak, stainless steel and a solid brass dowel for sturdy support. It can be set at 5 different angles with the last notch being the closed option. The very front edge has a magnetized strip milled into it to support either a canvas, drafting paper, etc. It can be removed in the same fashion and placed underneath when using the flat option, also magnetized underneath. When not in use, it is to be used for additional utensils. The left and right sides have milled out channels for writing, sketching or drawing utensils as well, 10 on either side.
Two small side cabinet boxes, are jointed together with mitered corners for continuous grain match. Each box consists of 2 drawers and white oak rift grain on the fronts. Small, hand turned knobs with brass rings are incorporated as pulls. Since the desk is created out of reclaimed lumber, the drawer sizes were limited to such, as they do not support to store regular sized paper, inside. Due to this limitation an additional tray was added to the underside of the easel panel for more storage. Slightly larger paper sizes than 11" x 14" can be stored in this space.
The desk represents an end to a long journey and a start of a new chapter as a maker.
